What is Wyse Streaming Manager?

In short it is a Thin Computing solution that delivers full PC functionality on a thin client. This means that traditional 'PC only' graphic applications such as Photoshop and other applications that require desktop software integration such as VOIP can be run as normal but with all the advantages of a Thin Computing architecture

Wyse Streaming Manager Solution comprises of three componants, the WSM server software, the Wyse VRO  reference, and the Wyse V00 stateless thin clients. The VRO reference device is used during system setup and management to package applications and operating system images, which are then hosted on the WSM server. The V00 thin clients are deployed to user's desktops and connect to the WSM server when they are powered up. The WSM server streams both the operating system and applications on demand and includes a web-based management console. Streaming operating systems and applications from a central point makes it easier for IT administrators to backup, update, manage, maintain and support multiple desktop devices centrally and with minimal staff.

Streaming Technology explained

Streaming is a generic term used to describe how data is delivered on-demand to a user. Many different types of data are streamed. The more common solutions you will hear about regarding application deployment and desktop computing are:

Application Streaming
-
This is where the application is packaged so that it can run without being first installed on the local PC. A local streaming client is installed, usually on a PC. The packaged application is streamed to the client. This is a good solution for running incompatible applications on a single desktop.

Operating System Streaming - This operating system is delivered on demand to a desktop thin client. The thin client can be “stateless” meaning that it has no operating system, configuration, or application data installed on it. This means that patches and updates need only be applied to one copy of the operating system, which will then delivered to every user when they next start, or reboot their thin client.

Image Streaming - Combining the operating system and all the required applications into one “image”, this image is then streamed to a thin client. Although image streaming can work with stateless devices, it is not a very flexible solution as a new image is needed for every application set.

Wyse Streaming Manager independently streams both the operating system and applications in an integrated solution providing a flexible and easy to manage streaming architecture.

Complimenting the Citrix Environment

Wyse Streaming Manager further improves the flexibility that enterprises using a Citrix Access Infrastructure currently enjoy, enabling their Thin Computing solution to be used in areas where a traditional ‘thin-client’ solution was not an option.

By streaming the 32-bit Citrix ICA client, Wyse Streaming Manager allows server-based applications to be run alongside local applications on the thin client desktop. As a result, users can enjoy a full PC-like experience while IT staff can capitalise on the benefits of a truly Thin Computing infrastructure.

Wyse Streaming Manager provides further PC functionality by enabling additional Citrix Access solutions such as Citrix GoToMeeting for online collaboration, GoToAssist for improved remote technical support at lower cost and Citrix NetScaler for maximised application performance.

How Wyse Streaming Manager Works

Wyse Streaming Manager employs a simple concept. Bits of the operating system and applications that a user needs are transferred across the network before being executed locally on their stateless thin client.

In practice, the operating system image is created using the operating system packaging utility included in Wyse Streaming Manager, which is run on a reference machine that has the same configuration as the desktop devices, plus some form of local storage. The files and settings of the local storage are captured and the information transferred as a single file package to the Streaming Directory on the WSM Core Server.

Any applications to be streamed are also packaged using a utility known as the Application Publisher. The application package includes any changes to the operating system that are needed for the application to function, such as application-specific files and the registry entries. This application package is then also stored on the WSM Core Server for streaming to the user’s thin client.

When the user turns on their stateless thin client, it looks for the operating system on the WSM Server, which responds by streaming the operating system bits across the network to the desktop. Only the bits that are needed for the device at that particular time are streamed and executed locally on the desktop device. This ensures that network bandwidth is not consumed when multiple devices are booted up.

The desktop being used remains secure and stateless as long as it runs Wyse Streaming Manager. It ignores any local desktop storage and no data remains on the device when the session is closed.
